The Bible, the Shroud and the Sudarium

  1. My book and website complement each other. I wrote my book first and then created the website. I have unique items in each so they should be viewed as a package supporting each other. My proof of God and Jesus is that if you consider the pattern of all the evidence (nature, archaeology, the Bible and Jesus burial cloths the Shroud of Turin and the Sudarium of Oviedo) it proves God and that Jesus is God. I want people to be able to use my website to prove God and Jesus.
  2. The Bible, the Shroud of Turin and the Sudarium of Oviedo form a unique trinity of three related objects that serve as witnesses to the truth of each other (as stated in Matt. 18:16). The Bible may be referencing the Shroud in Galatians 3:1 when it says “…before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified…”
  3. Bible prophecy predicts the future in advance and is supernatural evidence validating the Bible which claims that Jesus is God and the Son of Father God. Professor Stoner looked at the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah that were fulfilled by Jesus in the New Testament. He calculated that the odds for just eight of these prophecies being fulfilled was 1017 which is 100 quadrillion. Jesus fulfilled over 300 prophecies during his first coming and thus statistically it is a certainty that Jesus was the Messiah. However, we need independent evidence for the truth of prophecy. The skeptic can claim the New Testament was written to show fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy without that being true. The Shroud and the Sudarium prove that is a false statement.
  4. The Sudarium is kept in Oviedo, Spain. It is a blood stained cloth that is believed to have arrived in Spain before 711 AD. It contains real human blood but no image. There has been a team of approximately 40 scientists that have been studying the Sudarium for over a quarter century. In 2016 they confirmed that the results of their research show that both the Sudarium and Shroud covered the same corpse and that it cannot be anyone other than Jesus of Nazareth. Skeptics try and say the Shroud is a created (fake) image, but the problem they have is the Sudarium covered a real corpse and the Shroud covered the same corpse. How do you fake that? We know the bloodstains are a mixture of blood and water caused by pulmonary edema (excess fluid in the lungs). Only one manner of execution exhibits this – crucifixions. The article states: 1. They have been able to directly associate the Sudarium with the Gospel of John Chapter 20. 2. It has topographic information that can be correlated to the 3D information on the Shroud. They state: “What it all comes down to is that the resulting topographic features present in one fabric and the other are almost identical and show remarkable peculiarities.” 3. The blood stains have also made it possible for them to deduce that the relative positions of the wounds are the same in both cloths regardless of the size of the blood stains. 4. They state: “Let us recall that from the Sudarium we have deduced that the circulation of blood to the face, due to the movements to which the corpse was subjected, can provide topographic details about the face and help us reconstruct the area throughout which the blood circulated. This information was generated because the Sudarium was sewn to the hair and beard, and it remained firmly fixed on the head throughout the whole process: from the vertical position on the cross, to the descent of the corpse and its placement in a prone position, to the moment when the fabric was knotted around the head forming a hood, the transfer of the corpse in this prone position from a site near the Golgotha, then to the grave and, finally, the moment the Sudarium was removed by simply un-sewing it and gently pulling the top knot. To this day and age, thanks to the great care taken with the corpse at all times and the fact that the fabric was not used to wipe or rub the blood off the face, the stains have provided us with all of this important information.”
  5. The scientific consensus is that the Shroud is an image not made by human hands (see The Shroud of Jesus P. 158 Dr. Gilbert Lavoie) and that the radiation that produced the image came from the body. To this day how it was created is a mystery. The Journal of Research of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, U.S. Dept. of Commerce. says it is the most scientifically studied artifact in all of human history (The Turin Shroud Mark Niyr).

Shroud Timeline Summary

1898 First photo of Shroud showing life like detail.

1976 Shroud photographic image is revealed to contain unique 3D information embedded in the image. The device used was the VP-8 Image Analyzer which was developed for planetary and stellar photographs.

1978 The Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP) is formed and goes to Turin, Italy. It is given unlimited access for 120 hours to study the Shroud. It had 33 members with scientists coming from some of the most prestigious American institutions such as Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lockhead Corporation and Sandia National Laboratory among others.

1981 STURP Conclusions were that “No pigments, paints, dyes or stains have been found…  Computer image enhancement and analysis by a device known as a VP-8 image analyzer show that the image has unique, three-dimensional information encoded in it. Microchemical evaluation has indicated no evidence of any spices, oils, or any biochemicals known to be produced by the body in life or in death.”

“We can conclude for now that the Shroud image is that of a real human form of a scourged, crucified man. It is not the product of an artist. The blood stains are composed of hemoglobin and also give a positive test for serum albumin. The image is an ongoing mystery and until further chemical studies are made, perhaps by this group of scientists, or perhaps by some scientists in the future, the problem remains unsolved.”

Vernon Miller was the science photographer for STURP. He died in 2009. In 2019 his science photos were made available for free at www.shroudphotos.com in fulfillment of his wish. These are some of the finest images available of the Shroud.

1988 Carbon dating was used to date the Shroud between 1260-1390 AD.

1989 Sudarium – The Spanish Center for Sindonology (CES) starts investigating the Sudarium with a team of about 40 scientists referred to as EDICES.

2016 CES after more than 25 years of study reached the conclusion that both the Shroud and the Sudarium covered the same corpse and that it cannot be anyone other than Jesus of Nazareth.

2017 In 2017 Tristan Casabianca a French researcher submitted a legal request to the British Museum, which had supervised the laboratories that conducted the carbon dating.  He was given access to hundreds of pages of previously undisclosed information the raw data.  After two years of tests and analysis his team concluded that the carbon dating results were unreliable and that it was “…impossible to conclude that the Shroud of Turin dates from the Middle Ages.” The Sudarium has also been carbon dated with a date of 748 AD as the most probable. It is possible that the carbon dating was thrown off for both the Shroud and Sudarium by neutron radiation which would add carbon 14. Alternative methods of dating the age of the Shroud have been developed that date it to the time of Christ.
